Tsugaru-Shamisen Oyama School / the HeadMitsugu Oyama
Born in Hiraga-cho, Minami-Tsugaru-gun, Aomori Prefecture. Started to practice the Tsugaru-Shamisen at the age of 17 under the direction of his father (presently MITSUOU OYAMA).
A 31st-generaton graduate from the NHK Hogaku Players Training Association. In October, 1987, became the second-generation Grand Master
of MITSUGU OYAMA. Has instructed, appeared or performed in numerous Min-yo and popular music programs on TV and radio. Has been actively participating in live concerts, stage plays, and recordings mainly hosted by the Minshu Music Society.
While energetically training his students, he not only inherits and passes on the tradition of classical Min-yo but also continues to invent new Tsugaru-Shamisen techniques, and a series of compositions and arrangements unprecedented in traditional Min-yo; he is challenging the potentials of Japanese musical instruments that could be in harmony with new times. He has energetically performed overseas; in additions to the performances in Moscow, Los Angeles, Paris, Istanbul, Hawaii, Germany, and Bulgaria, he visited many Asian and African countries including Qatar, Uganda, and Madagascar, as part of the cultural exchange programs of the Japan Foundation. He has devoted himself to the succession of the traditional Japanese culture.
