Born in Tokyo. Son of MITSUGU OYAMA, the Iemoto of Tsugaru-Shamisen Oyama-ryu. Started to practice the Tsugaru-Shamisen at a very young age under the directions of his grandfather and Iemoto, MITSUOU OYAMA. Studied the fundamentals of music through the activities of brass band clubs at junior high and high schools. Made frequent appearances in “The New Year’s Day Parlor Trick Competition” on TV, the Japan Record Awards, and Min-yo TV shows. In addition to the recording of popular music, TV commercials, and video game software, Yutaka has been involved in various activities such as providing music directions for musicals and stage plays. Has visited many countries of Africa, Europe and Asia as part of the cultural exchange programs of the Japan Foundation, contributing to the popularization of Japanese culture.
While firmly establishing himself as a successor of classical Tsugaru-Shamisen, Yutaka also has been very active in exploring the new aspects, appeals, and potentials of the Tsugaru-Shamisen; through the activity of his own band “Soothe,” he collaborated with performers with various kinds of instruments.
